I decided recently to become a bottle digger/hunter, however should have gotten into it a long time ago. My grandfather was one of the biggest collectors/sellers and diggers in connecticut maybe even new england, until he passed away in 2001. BOB S.

anyway all that aside first time out i find a giant old town dump think i might hit mid 1800s in here but i have a lot of work to do.. Haha. Like half a football feild.

Im finding bottles everywhere all very late 1800s to 1920ish maybe late 20s?

The masons 1858 is the best thing ive found so far. Theres no pictures of it anywhere, no info on it. It has base mark 1833. Its a ball with no logo. I really dont know much about it or how rare it is.. If anyone has a red book can you see if it is im there. Even if its not valuable i think its cool.

Welcome to the forum it sounds like you caught bug and your now addicted lol. Nice mason jar I don't know how rare your jar is I've never dug one. But I see them all the time at antique shops for about 30 bucks.

Sorry to say, they're not very rare. If you had a different colored one- some are green- and had the lid, you might get 30-40. But yours is probably worth around 10-20. But welcome! and go find more! I grew up in New Canaan- where are you (generally)? Yakker

I have a doz, of these mason jars, you wont get rich on them, why are so mean '"new bottle collectors"so obsessed with how much money they can get.

I don't really care what it's worth.. I thought it was rare because while doing research and looking up other mason jars I didn't see the quart sized with writting this small. Most quart sized the writting was much larger ..

I didn't see any with a dot under the mason or any with the base mark 1833..
I'm new and I've read and understand now theres so many different types that theres no real way to narrow it down..

Still think its a cool jar the whittled look though my window and the blue color are nice

It is a nice jar I would love to find one there always broken. I would love an amber one.

It is a cool jar- and even if they're chipped a bit at the lip, I do keep them (and fill them with other things I've found)- so you done good. She's whole!
Although you didn't actually ask the value, you mentioned it at the end of your post/question, and I guess we get a little weary of so many newbies coming on board w/ their first find, and all they can think about is $$- and selling it. None of us meant to put you off-
Glad you're enjoying it! (we did too) Yakker

Thanks yacker! Im not completely new to this.. I used to go to Mansfield Connecticut where my grandfather set up and sold bottles and was around his collection alot when I was a kid.

And he told me stories about bottle digging all the time but I never tried it for myself until recently.

Not going to lie in the back of my mind I hope I find something worth thousands haha and if I weren't a medicine or poison bottle I'd.probably sell it.. Or if it was a Connecticut company I'd probably keep it as well regardless of type..

Hopefully over the next few months I find some really good stuff I'm locating a lot of.dumps on old maps and a " super dooper secret search method" lmao I would of been out there the past couple days but stupid me crawled in poison ivy or something and its all over me .. So hopefully middle of next week I get out there.

I have a bit of ancestry in the Mansfield area. Man- there were great dumps where I grew up, but the road is all full of McMansions now, and I doubt anyone would be enthusiastic about folks marching around the woods, stirring things up (alas...sigh). Otherwise I'd drive up and drag you out to the sites of 2 that I knew of, once. Really cool that your grandfather was into bottles! Definitely gives you a 'leg up'. All I knew as a kid was that if it didn't have a screw cap, it was o-l-d.
I'll poke around when I have a little time, and see if you indeed have something unusual. I'll check the ones I have too. Cheers! Yak

Sorry to hear about the poison ivy I just have to look at it and I get it. There's nothing worse then having it in your eyes.
