Well, I needed one asap, and even in the large metro area I live in it was not easy.
Radio Shack no longer carries them. So finally I found a Bass Pro Shop that carried them in stock. Got a Bounty Hunter Lonestar. Any comments welcomed. Originally I wanted an Acer 250, but no chance I could just go out and pick one up. Actually Im happy with the lonestar. It was a little cheaper than the acer, but seems to work fine. I think a 5 year old could use it. Went to a couple little park beaches. Its new in the season, they even had piles of sand they brought in. So I only found a few pennies. Also, searched in the woods a little. No foundations or any thing. Found some rifle shells and buried coke cans and so forth. Works fine, when theres some thing there you know it. I tend to fiddle with the knobs a lot, usually start all metal and work my way to more descrimitive.

Glad you got to try it out, Todd. I think you will be satisfied for a short while. We all want a better detector.

Congrats on your first finds.

Your best bet for a detector would have been to visit the manufactures web sites where they list dealers you can order from. I'll bet at BPS. you didn't have anyone there that could even show you how to use them. It seems that most that use a Bounty Hunter soon want to move up to something better. I think this is all in their head as BH will find targets, you just have to learn it well.

Good Luck.

I agree with sandman , if have the patience to learn what your machine is telling you and it doesn't matter what type you will find targets but other machine have some features(bells&whistles)make ar able to make it easier to figure out what the target is before you dig it up.
So be patiente and dig everything that your machine grabs on to this way you will learn the different sounds etc.

I don't think some realize how addicting the hobby can become and how quick it happens. I started with one and less then 10 months later I have 3 and working on my forth. Those who know, know that different units work better for different types of hunting.

Something to keep in mind is the better the unit the better the trade-in or resale. You can buy an excal for $1050 new, now 2,3,and 4 year old units on EBay are going for $700 to $850, so they hold their resale value.

i have used the wally world pioneer 202, which i believe to be the same machine, it works quite well. i have found a number of gold and silver rings and over 200 dollars in coinsmany neat relics and its fair share of trash. i love my machine but wish i had waited and bought the ace for pretty close to the same money for the pinpoint feature.
i have a very difficult time pinpointing, I use a hand held kids detector for a pinpointer which works well about 3-4 inches but anything deeper than that i tend to have to dig a hole bigger than needed.
overall its a hobby and meant to be fun......if your having it who cares

Don't get me wrong. I took tw656 on his first hunt. He asked me alot of questions before he bought his detector. I have an Ace250 and still want a better machine. I think alot of us who can't afford a better machine at the moment hope for a better machine, someday.

I wasn't saying anything bad about his detector, just making a comment.

Maybe it's my fault I came across that way. :)
