Yep, the boxes are $500 (or 50 rolls or 1000 halves) in each. The problem my little branch bank has is they put ALL coins turned in through the coin counting machine, and they drop into bags. They say can only have a limited amount of change in stock, and since the half dollar bag is $1000, and they get very few halves turned in, they don't want to end up with $950 in halves sitting under the machine. Thats their story anyway. I also am worried about having all those coins tying up my roll hunting cash.
The way banks treat coin collectors seems to vary a lot, and I don't like to feel like I'm causing problems (or pay bank fees) so I just ask. But, I live in the Chicago suburbs where there are dozens and dozens of banks close by. Here is a pic of a box I got when I found 20 rolls at a bank. Halves (and dollars, although there is little to search for in Susan B or Sacs) are the only problems, as banks don't have problems with widely circulating coins. I think it is a shame that banks treat roll hunters poorly, as there is really no other way to collect Kennedy halves (except buying them from coin stores and e-bay, and where's the fun in that?).
