Hey, I've never posted here before, but I'm really enjoying this site. I used to have a metal detector and did a lot of treasure hunting, but haven't done it in years.

Anyway, I like to go to garage sales, and found this at a recent school fundraising sale.

I got it for two bucks. It's just a duck, but on closer inspection it looks pretty old! I have absolutely no idea where it's from, but it seems Asian somehow.

It's brass and painted ceramic, and it's the painted ceramic that caught my eye.

Anyway, here are photos. I hope somebody has some idea as to what this thing is and where it's from! Even just a name so I could do some googling, whatever helps!

Thanks in advance.

I would like to see what other, more knowledgeable T'Netters have to say.
I think it's very cool Art.

I assume there are no makers marks on this piece?

It looks to be Japanese to me. The Japanese were famous for making decorator items in bronze and porcelain. You didn't mention if the piece is light or heavy, but I would assume it's fairly light. If it is made of bronze it would be pretty heavy as bronze weights more then copper.

The porcelain looks fairly crudely painted, so as far as a date goes . . . I'd guess it's 1950's. :icon_scratch:

Just my two cents worth. :icon_thumright:

Yes, it is light, the bronze is pretty thin. And there are absolutely no markings or letters of any kind on it.

It seems like bronze rather than copper, but I sure don't know.

Looks like the paint decoration goes on under the brass. If so the makers mark is probably hidden with no way to find it without ruining the piece. My guess would be post war Japan, but without a makers mark you'll need an expert to really nail it down.

Why is it that first time posters always seem to come up with the most fantastic pcs?
