I left the grass roots going through it. Appears to have hinged open about half way. Solid for the most part-heavy for it's size. Also my hands are large but not neanderthal.

Maybe a chunk of an old mechanical pencil? I can't the hinge you mention, but is it possibly pieces of a mechanism for one of these?:
