I found this container the morning I'll look for the other half of the lid this weekend. Has an eagle on it. 1800s farm condederate troop camped near. image.webp
 

Eagle brand chewing tobacco tin. Just a guess. Could be any tobacco tin that held little bags of tobacco and papers.

lightened it up some, looks small maybe 2x3 inch
the square looks like a place to engrave your name

I'm thinking cigarette case.
The early cigarettes were non-filtered and much shorter. (2")
