Dug from an 1870s-1930s foundation. About 3 inches square, 1/4 inch high. Just cant think of what its use is :icon_scratch: maybe a guard for a wheel or geer?

Might be for holding rolling papers for cigarettes or business cards :dontknow:

that actually makes scense, if it sat flat on a desk or table you could touch the top and just slide one out. Theres no spring to keep it closed so I dont think it would have been for a bill fold.

My guess is a cutting guide for leather or thin wood. If it was a template, it wouldn't be both sides.

I've seen dress military uniforms that use a piece like that. I tried to find one on google, but couldn't. I think they slip the slot over a brass button and slide a strap through them perhaps to help carry a drum or flag. I'll keep searching & see if I can find one.

Will a deck of playing cards fit in there?
