Brass Hook

What is this brass hook? I found it at the site of an 1820's plantation in west central MS. Whatever this is, does it date to the age of the house?

It appears to be a suspended clip. And as far as the date it depends. Check and see if there is a name anywhere on it.

These fairly often have a patent date on them, ranging from the 1870's-1890's.

Like the others have said, it's a suspender buckle. Judging by the design I would say that nhbenz is right about the dates of it's use. They are always a great find.
