On a recent trip to Virginia I found this brass item. We found scores of bullets, cannon balls and fragments, and an artillery shell. Brass is few and far between. We seem to not find any buttons or buckles or plates. However this item was right in the middle of many other finds which were easily identifiable as CW era relics. Notice the twisted decoration and the fact that there are holes in each corner. Had I found the entire piece, I would assume it was square. I did find this in two pieces and clued the small piece to the larger which can be seen in the photo. Piece measures almost 2" inches by 1 1/2". Any suggestions would be great. I always seem to find things that I have a hard time identifying. Thanks guys.
