Brass Key

I found this little brass "key" last night.

The watch winders I see have a different tip and the sardine can key has a slot.

Can someone ID this item for me? DCMatt, you out there?

Just based on size I would guess padlock key. But it seems too simple for that...

Roller skates?

I have seen similar keys for old time clocks.

This is most certainly a barrel tap key. 1700s.

It is a barrel key. The local hardware store sells modern versions for fireplace flues, gas furnaces, and to use in place of those round valves on exterior water faucets so the neighbors kids can't run your water bill up. I am guessing one that age was probably used on some time of hearth or stove.
