brass knob that is threaded.... what is it?

I found this today at one of my usual spots. It is made of brass and threaded on the side with the larger hole. The hole does right through and the ball part is hollow with a smaller hole. It weighs around 1.5 lbs. It reminds me of a trailer hitch but I have never seen one made of brass before. What do you all think out there?
 

Looks kinda like a newel post finial from some of the old cast iron and brass balustrades I have seen.

It has a really fine thread for an old item. The hole in the end looks like it was busted by being screwed on too far.

Being that fine of threads it was probably on a pipe.

Nope, I doubt I am even remotely correct, always get these wrong.

But I was thinking it was part of the lower section.
