I always thought that mine was something off the front of a steamer trunk

Now that I've seen yours I'm assuming it's some kind of buckle. I will be pleased when we get an identification. Mine came from a Cellar hole that had nothing newer than late eighteen hundreds with finds dating back to late Seventeen hundreds. This was one of my earliest finds from when I started detecting

Very interesting that you found one of these as well. You were saying that you found yours at a cellar hole from the late 1700s to late 1800s. I found mine in an area that I have found colonial relics in so it could be quite old. It will be interesting to find out what this object is.

Any chance this is a pin (something to wear)?
What is that horizontal bar going across the piece on the 2nd photo (rear)?
Something must slide in there - else why would it exist?

I think a piece of cloth or leather went through the bar on the back, and it is connected on both sides. Maybe something someone wore or maybe a piece off of something horse related.

It kind of reminds me of the top of one of those things that you sharpen a straight razor with. The white cloth part could have been attached to the loop and leather to 2 the other part?

Looks like half a sash buckle, and you guys have a half each.

Yeah, it does look like a sash buckle. Any date range?

would you say victorian era or turn of the century for a date on the sash buckle I found??

This is a possibility it seems like most of the sash buckles are more three-dimensional and this item is relatively flat
