Dug in SC, this solid brass relic has me baffled. I've considered it being a piece of musical instrument to a firearm piece. The number on the back reads 27-A or, 27 7A

are you sure there isn't a number in front of the A

27 7A

just an observation, otherwise I have no clue.

A over a, counter weight ?? ???

It looks like it is concave on on side and convex on the other. If so, it is definitely designed for finger placement.

It does. A rod certainly attached to both sides. A door latch is possible I suppose, but I can't see it being of soft brass

This appears to be some type of lid. The item was connected/pivoted on the axis and covered a hole. It was possibly for creamer or coffee pot.
