Found this in the woods next to an old school. It has a spring inside, it’s tapered and it has an opening on its side. Any Ideas?

It's part of a utility / poleline hardware connector called a copper deadend.

Thanks for the solve! How did you know what it was?
I'm in the scrap business and we get these in all the time from the electric co-op in the area.
The spring is to hold the jaws that allow a copper wire to enter one way and not be able to
get pulled out.
