Clearly this is very similar, but mine has a much deeper "pocket' or "rim" than the buttons that are shown, I marked as solved because they are so similar, but wondering if mine might have been for a different application ?

Your piece is deeper/thicker.
I’d guess it sat in a relief or pocket designed into the saw handle. I’d guess yours to be older. The thinner, surface-mount pieces probably came along later. They would be less work to assemble and less costly than one like yours. I’m only basing this opinion on observation; I could be wrong.

The ebay listing I linked to in post #3 was just intended to show the motif and inscription commonly used by several manufacturers. It's a later item, although 'vintage'.

The drawing I provided shows the earlier type with a high rim, screw mounted into a recess on saw handles which dates between c.1840s to c.1850s.

Yes that picture drawing looks almost identical, and GOD only knows where I dug ...
