Brass Piece (tool?) w/writing

I found this last week in an old school yard.
I forgot to take a photo using an object for scale.
It's about 2 5/8" long.
Brass, I think?
Hollow at the ends. Either, solid in the center, or plugged with debris.
3/8" O.D.
