Found this in Richmond Virginia area with other Civil War objects. If it was straightened out it would have a diameter of about 2 1/2". Any ideas? Brass Thing.webpBrass Thing Top.webp

Phish, that is a neat looking find. I 'm just going to throw an idea at you here. You say this piece is made of brass, and I'm looking at what appears to be two holes at the top of the piece at either end. I'm wondering if this could possibly be a piece of flag staff that would connect the upper and lower piece of the wooden flag staff. The dimension's along with this piece being made of brass would be a possibility. Was there any markings found on this piece? What is your take? Great find and here's hoping you can get this piece ID'd.

Thanks for your reply. It had something in it that didn't look like dirt; I'm thinking rotted wood. No markings but the edge nearest the holes is thicker, like a rim.
