On Sunday night, 4 to 6 feet of ice cold toxic coal ash and slurry burst out of a Tennessee Valley Authority holding pond for power plant waste and buried 12 homes, 400 acres, and wrecked a train. Coal ash is more radioactive than nuclear waste.

GIL FRANCIS: The ash pond is approximately forty acres. It’s an area where once the coal is burned, you stack the ash in a pond. And we’ve had about five inches of rain. We think that perhaps the rain and the freezing temperatures may be a contributing factor to the ash pond slide.

That mess is near here. A friend of mine at work talked to a couple he knows that live there and were evacuated. It has them wondering if they want to move back into their home. They already have signs all around the lakes saying to not eat the catfish because of the nuclear facilities that leaked radioactive material, lead, mercury and everything else that is bad for you into the ground water since the early 40's. We have an unusually high rate of rare cancers all around here. One school that is downstream from one plant had to have a foot of topsoil dumped on their playground because the small stream that borders their playground ran out of one of the settling ponds from that plant. Those school kids had played in that creek for about 30 years before they thought to test the soil and that was after they saw the playground flooded from heavy rain.

KINGSTON, Tenn. (AP) -- The CEO and president of the nation's largest public utility vowed to clean up a community encased in sludge after a major coal ash spill, where many residents fear toxic elements could seep into their drinking water.

Sandy Dickman, whose land remains covered by several feet of gray muck, said he doesn't think he'll be drinking the water. And he dreaded what might happen after the mire dries out and could become airborne, despite the utility's promise to test air quality and local wells.

"It will look like a blizzard in the Arctic," said Dickman, who moved to the area in 1975 and said he always suspected such a flood could happen. Tennessee Valley Authority head Tom Kilgore fielded questions from more than 200 residents at a meeting Sunday - people like Dickman, worried about everything from property values to livestock that could ingest contaminated water or grass.
