Hello everyone,

I started hunting arrowheads 5 years ago. I hunt a few cornfields, but I mostly hunt the Ohio River banks. The river has been up for quite a while, was just able to get out last weekend since August. Lots of erosion in the high banks due to prolonged high water. I found what I think may be a stone pendant, broke off at the drill hole. When I picked it up I thought it was a broken gorget, but I noticed it has some decorative etching on it. I started thinking it may have been a pendant? I thought I would humbly ask those on here with much more experience what their take is on this. Thanks in advance.

At least in Ohio & Indiana about the only time you see detailed etching on slate is on broken gorgets & pendants. Nice find!

My guess would be a broken two hole gorget, looks like it has quite a bit of use wear on the rim of the hole.

Very cool find. Can you make out anything in the etchings or are they random? Thanks for showing.

I see a couple crescent shapes, possibly moons? Mountains with trees in front with crescent shapes slightly above is what I see. Or think I see.

Looks like a pendant with one hole and tally marks. Very nice find.

You have a very vivid imagination. Gary

HOLY COW.

Adena Tablet/pendant?

A very nice find, congrats

Yeah, first thing I noticed was all that engraving. Great find.

Pretty cool find!

Great find , awesome to think it could have been a pendant very personal artifact

Very interesting, if you look close at the fifth photo the two etchings are the same.

Liked the article recommended by joshuaream. In my 60 something years collecting I have never found a worked piece of slate. I'm envious but not enough to buy any, as they are so easy to fake. I'm impressed with your find but my mucking about, in these mts, is about to stop, fall down to much.

I tried to increase the visibility of the detail.

Could they have rubbed pigment into specific scratches in order to make an artistic piece. Then made changes to it later?
