From what I can find in my plate books, I would say you have a Mississippi sword belt plate with the bars broke off. Now if I can just figure out a way to beat you out of it. Super find. (Note, I make no judgement as to it being original.)

Duggap and Recondigger are correct, it is a Mississippi State Militia swordbelt buckle, made prior to the civil war by a Northern buckle-manufacturer in the 1840s/50s... or a modern-made Reproduction of one. Because the rectangular loop on its end and the attachment hook on its back are both missing, authenticating it with certainty is extra-difficult.

Thanks everyone. Little more background, I dug it in a corn field in North Louisiana at an old house sight, the owner of the farm could not remember there ever being a house in the location. Also he is in his 80s and grew up near the place. Who knows maybe I got lucky!

Beautiful buckle. If you dug it yourself, it is unlikely a reencator lost it. They do lost stuff, I'd bet original.
