With the weather improving I decided to return to the colonial home site where I have found two Rev War buttons, joined by my friend Alan. I started the day digging test holes in the area where vmiairpwr07 found a bottle dump last weekend, hoping to find other dumps. No luck there so I took a break from the digging and metal detected for a while.
The only relic this turned up was a complete iron buckle, so I returned to sifting a spot where I have had good luck in the past. It must have been close to the kitchen because there was an abundance of animal bones, teeth and oyster shells in addition to the usual pottery, glass and pipe stem pieces.
Sifting is hard work & after a while I took another metal detecting break and found a partial early brass buckle. Then back to sifting and better luck than earlier. The finds came quickly-a tombac button, iron buckle, then a piece of the stem of a glass. Next out of the sifter was what I first thought was a cuff button, but turned out to be a very small horse harness decoration with a fair amount of silver wash on the front.
There were two interesting finds yesterday. In the sifter I found a pewter spoon bowl that was completely rolled up on itself like a Tootsie Roll; not sure how that happened. But Alan had the most unusual find of the day-a domed button encased in mortar attached to a brick from the house.
The forecast for the next three days calls for sunny skies with temps in the low 70s. I think I may be coming down with something. ..
