This is a top of a "BUFFALO BRAND" button(?) and was found at a homeplace dating from late 1800's/early 1900's. I just wondered if anyone could tell me anything about the brand? Was this on work clothes or maybe overalls?
I also have a button/lapel thingy that says "CAN I SWING ON YOUR" and a picture of a gate below the words(can I swing on your gate), but what does that mean? Was this a political saying or something? I'm stumped on this and I've tried to google this to see what I get and nothing is close. This thing came out of a jar of old buttons from an auction and is made from some kind of cheap metal. Thanks for looking and for any help you might have! kind regards, sandcreek4

That second item is a shirt or colar stud... I think.
Thanks Montana Jim--I thought it was some kind collar stud because of the post thingy on the back, but wasn't sure.

The second one is a rebus. I believe that everything rebus was the rage during the 1890s, when a myriad of items were produced using the "artform". I have not seen a clothing stud with a rebus before.

Hopefully PBK will see this and clarify the matter further.

I believe he is a big fan of the rebus.
Thanks, Plehbah! I had to look that "rebus" word up on dictionary.com! ;D kind regards, sandcreek4

I believe that the "button thingy" is probably a c. 1920's Cracker Jack novelty lapel stud. There were at least seven other varieties of the same sort: "You Got My [goat ]," "Don't Be a [goose]," "O U [monkey]," "U and I Make a Good [pear]," etc.

An identical lapel stud, also attributed by the seller as a Cracker Jack or possibly TootsieToy item, was recently listed on eBay, where it sold for $7.50:

"buffalo" brand is a clothing store out of L.A. California. It is most likely a button off a pair of jeans they make.
Are they still in business? This button was found at a late 1800's/early 1900's homestead site here in Oklahoma along with some other things dating from the turn of the century. Thanks for the info, 4-H staff! regards, sandcreek4

How do you know this stuff? I swear PBK, if you could only use your powers for good, and not evil, the world would be a better place

Nice find and ID on the crackerjack toy. There is a Buffalo Brand button on e-Bay from a buffalo item collector appears to be a little different and doesnt say much about it. http://cgi.ebay.com.hk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290289602806&indexURL=
Thanks, bigcypresshunter! The buffalo on that button looks like the same as mine--I wish I could find out if it was a "jeans" button or maybe some kind of work clothes--I'm still searching! kind regards, sandcreek4

I think your button came from Pennsylvania. Edward Tryon Company in Philadelphia used the "Buffalo Brand" label in their line of hunting clothes...image.webpI found a buffalo brand button in a 1912 camp, other items online are from that time period too...
