Looks like a .50 BMG for the Browning M2 Heavy machine gun. It would date from 1920 to the present. I wonder what it was doing there......

Thanks guys I was thinking 50 also but I don't know guns lol I just know it's big...maybe guy brought it home as a souvenir from the war

That would be my guess. I have a .50 Cal bullet my Uncle brought home from Pearl Harbor and gave to me. That bullet had been shot at attacking Japanese aircraft. He said they rained down on the town and were laying around everywhere, and quite a lot of them were picked up as souvenirs. He brought me back lots of Japanese stuff, including a brand new helmet from a supply cave on Guam, but being a kid the stuff was played with, and that bullet is the only thing I have left.
