I got into a nice Civil War spot this weekend and found a bunch of mostly fired bullets. A couple are 45 cal. and 1 1/4 " in length, hoping they might be Whitworths??
The bullets in wood were found in swamp mud and I exposed the bullets while the wood was still wet. I set them out in the sun to dry all day and got some wood oil on them tonight.
Thanks for looking and any input on the 45 cal bullets would be appreciated.--JB

Hell yes JB!!! Whitworth's look legit, lets hope so :icon_thumleft: The bullets in wood will display nice! Very nice dig!!!

I’ve only found one CW bullet in wood, you have quite a collection right there. Beautiful!

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!! The bullets in pieces of wood are cool display pieces!!!

Whitworth slugs. Pics found on American Civil War forum. Most were 6 sided but not all. All that came from England were 6 sided. Some 6 sided cast by Confederates but they also cast straight sided slugs for the Whitworth. Yours could be those but I'm no expert. Gary

You look to have dug a couple Whintworth's

Oh & those are some Sweet Bullets in wood . WTG!

Congrats on the awesome finds! The bullets in wood are amazing! My challenge to anyone... find some Rev war or 1812 projectiles in wood! I'm sure it's been done but probably not easy!

Nicely done man! BIW are falling apart underground every day now. Good job saving these.

Awesome display of the keepers! :occasion14:

looks like a day of good digging. Very nice!:occasion14:

Nice, nice hunt. On the .45's, it they are genuine Whitworths and not later .45-70's, there should be NO little dot in the base. Check yours out. The ones with the dots are 1870's.

Thanks Smokey, both of the bases are pinched closed so I can't really see, but all of the bullets that I found were from a documented CW site and mostly fired. I wouldn't think any were from the 1870s.
