I headed out Sunday afternoon detecting the bottom slope of my local beach, wishing there would be more daylight to really take advantage of the moon tides. I was getting my usual
mostly junk sprinkled with a few coins, sinkers etc. I didn't realize until I got home, that one of my coins was a shield nickle from the 1800's, my oldest find to date. At first I thought it was a 2 cent piece, but then I was able to see the 5 on the back side. The detail is a little better than the pictures show. Although it is worthless because of its condition, it's nice to know there's still really old stuff out there. My five month gold drought continues, but at least this keeps things interesting.
