Thanks. Found in Georgia.That is a general issue Union Eagle button. I do not know the history of when it was introduced, but it was used extensively by Union soldiers during the Civil War.

Thank you for the infoThat particular version of US Army "eagle button" was introduced in 1854 and in service until what collectros call the "Indian Wars version" was introduced in 1875. It differs from other versions in having a lined "spade shield" with no letter. It was made for the use of Enlisted-men's ranks (Private, Corporal, Sergeant). From 1854 onward, only Officer buttons had a letter in the shield.
