I have not gotten it clean enough to see how may stars are on it. Found in the same are with early 19th century coins and an Eagle Infantry button. It is coat sized.

Can anyone put a time on this based on the design. I have searched the internet and have seen others but not with the same exact design.

Can't read anything on the back at the moment, and the condition is such that it may not be possible even with more cleaning.

Thanks for looking

UPDATE: for clean pics see reply #5

Bob

It's hard to see but I think it is a Marine button. Possibly pre war but could be later. I am assuming it is a two piece button.

Yup & Yup  Boil it in some peroxcide.Maybe some guilt left to work with after you do.Q-tips & lemon juice after the peroxcide boil. Then rinse with some distilled water.Getter cleaned a little would help date it.
One I found.

I have gotten quite a bit more detail just picking at it. You can see it is a bit mishapen and the front is slightly indented. I'm not sure if I'll do the peroxide as it might seperate if I remove too much dirt from the back. I'll get another pic of my effort up here shortly.

First need to run the 15 year old with his brand spankin new learners permit out to drive around the school parking lot for a bit.

here is the result of some toothpicking. Looks to be similar to yours Pete.

I see an A N Y on the back, but you can see the poor condition. although the two pieces are tight it looks like they are just asking to separate.

Yea I see enough but a back mark would seal the deal. But the small head eagle with the beak closed like that are after the C.W..Or tend to be that way it seems. Mine I figured dated late 1800's early 1900's.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Bob -- The construction on yours looks pre-war. Also nice to see that strand of cloth on the shank (looks like one anyway).

Yeah hard to tell if thats a strand of cloth or a root. either way I've left it on there :icon_thumright:

My son likes the smilies that move and asked me to put one on here, so here it is. (his choice) :hello:

The only backmark I could find with "any" in it is "Tiffany & Co" 1852-1867. There are probably others, I just couldn't find them.
