Hello everyone, this is my first post so forgive my noobness. I found this button yesterday in my backyard and I'm wondering if anyone can help me id it. The town I live in has had several battles throughout time and I'm not sure if this is possibly from any of them or just a random find. I have access to a metal detector and I'm debating checking out the rest of the yard. Thanks for any info, or tips for a noob.

It is a Civil War era Coat button. Nice find!

Unfortunately NOT correct. DCM is always right... but here goes.

That's a US Indian Wars button... 1875 until 1902. The eagle has a long neck and a pronounced shield. Below are pics of a CW button (top) and an Indian Wars button (bottom).

Nice button. Now go check the rest of the yard!

It's great when you can step into your own backyard to go detecting! Get back out there and hit it hard! :icon_thumleft:

I believe I use the same resource for identifying button backmarks as Matt does and that backmark is listed 1859-1863. I do see the difference in the button design, so I would assume either the website has incorrectly identified the backmark date range or they re-used this backmark on a later design.

I have great respect for DCMatt. He is one the best ID guys I know.

I wondered about the info DCM provided. I can only assume that your assumption is correct, either re-used or misidentified. I am certain my ID is correct.

Kiros32 (and DCMatt), that website is seriously incorrect. It's the same website I fussed about here in the What Is It? forum a few days agp, pointing out that contrary to that website's statement, "Scovill Mfg. Co. Waterbury" was used in Scovill backmarks for 112 years (1850 to 1962), not just from 1850 to 1865. The website even miss-spells Waterbury as Waturbury. In view of such important errors, I must recommend deleting that website from your reference resources.bookmarks. If possible, buy a copy of the current edition (there are several older editions) of the book "American Military Button Makers And Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates" by William F. McGuinn & Bruce S. Bazelon. The current edition has a butternut/yellowish cloth cover. It has hundreds of PHOTOS of button-backmarks (with time-dates), especially Scovill, Horstmann, Waterbury Button Co., and Steele & Johnson (the four biggest button-manufactuerers in US history).
