One of the fascinating things about this hobby is that quite often it puts you down the path of research. Whenever I dig a flat button I always like to research the back mark on it.
Here I have a plain gilted flat button and the maker's back mark is "W&G CHANCE EXTRA RICH".
The first book I go to is my McGuinn and Bazelon backmark book but not in there, likely as they probably did not make military buttons.
I went web surfing and was able to find out that William and George Chance of Birmingham England made firearms from 1820s - 1847. I looked in the UK Detector Finds Data base under buttons but no mention.
Have I found a rare button or is this an instance where a dealer had a limited and undocumented side business?
