One of the fascinating things about this hobby is that quite often it puts you down the path of research. Whenever I dig a flat button I always like to research the back mark on it.

Here I have a plain gilted flat button and the maker's back mark is "W&G CHANCE EXTRA RICH".

The first book I go to is my McGuinn and Bazelon backmark book but not in there, likely as they probably did not make military buttons.

I went web surfing and was able to find out that William and George Chance of Birmingham England made firearms from 1820s - 1847. I looked in the UK Detector Finds Data base under buttons but no mention.

Have I found a rare button or is this an instance where a dealer had a limited and undocumented side business?

1820-1828 William ran the Birmingham operations; George was in NY for the years listed. He imported Birmingham hardware goods including gilt buttons with their backmark. The NYC business was dissolved in 1826 but listed in the NYC directories until 1828. The above link also states there were three other buttons besides Extra Rich.
