Looks like a button to me.

That's what I thought but my girl friend said it looked like an old rivet. Wonder what type of button it could be?

With that "blob" on the back and the looks of it being hit with a hammer I don't think it is a button. But, I am not sure it is a rivet either. It doesn't look like any button I have seen. Maybe some one will prove me wrong though.

A button would have a hole in the back loop I would think

I'm thinking it's a brass rivet, possibly from a saddle or the harness.
It definitely has some age to it though.
