I was able to get out Saturday and Monday over the long holiday weekend. Saturday was pretty futile as I was only able to come up with a late 18[SUP]th[/SUP] century cufflink and an 1883 IHP (IHP #27 FTY) aside from the usual spoons, oil lamp parts, and other assorted junk.

Sunday evening I got a text from the wife of a farmer who has two farms that I hunt, to tell me he had plowed a field that I had discovered a small house site in a couple years ago. Up till now the field had been a hayfield, and clumps of high grass prevented a thorough searching of the site. I had pounded this field pretty hard in the past, but felt some smaller buttons, cufflinks, and if I was really lucky, maybe a Spanish half real might show up. I was a little disappointed with the results, finding only 6 buttons, a musket ball, a French gunflint, and a thin brass disc that I though was a button until I got home and cleaned it.

From what I’ve been able to determine, the plow struck thin brass disc is a German Jeton from Nuremburg circa 1800 depicting Alexander the Great on one side and a rampant lion on the other. Here is my Jeton along with a picture of a non-dug example.

Here is a group shot of my holiday finds, including a Pennsylvania State Seal button I found two weekends ago (bottom row - left)

Lastly, here is a shot of my display from the Jeton site prior to the latest group of finds. Only two coppers and now 35 buttons. Not a very good coin to button ratio!

Thanks for looking and I hope your luck is better than mine :laughing7:

I'd be happy if my luck was as good as yours. :icon_thumright:

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

That is amazing! I've not seen anything like that posted from the U.S. on TNet before. Great work!

Thanks Tom. Found in Washington County PA. I could have called it a bucket lister, but I never expected to find a jeton, so I'm not gonna lie and call it a "bucket lister" :laughing7:

Looks like the kind of coin Cru would normally post. Awesome surprise. 27 IHPs FTY early September is crazy. Love it when they are nice and green like your latest recovery. Congrats!!

Thanks Thad. I was also thinking Cru when I realized what I had. I have found a Jeton and an scale weight at this place, but only two early large cents. Kinda weird. Yeah, 27 IHPs, but only 8 silvers including one Spanish. I haven't dug a silver since April :dontknow:

Great hunt I would be happy with just a coin like that or a Cru coin if just once in my lifetime lol. Awesome post and finds. Tommy

Nice Jeton! Nurnberg was the place for milling Jetons back then. The inscription on the lion side says "rife with bravery".
Excellent hunt you had!

Thanks Westfont. These are not a common find in my area, in fact this is the first one I have seen turn up in SW Pennsylvania. I was hoping you might be able to add some info on this find. Thanks for the translation!

Not much info on this Jeton. Brass. No year. Alexander I from Russia personified as Alexander the Great. So it must date past his reign 1801-1825 because the mintmaster Johann Jakob Lauer lived 1806-1865.
Here is one for sale with roughly $30.

Based on the buttons recovered from this site, I would estimate it was active from about 1795 to 1825. That fits with the reign of Alexander I, but not with the mint master.

Something weird with this Jeton. Another Jeton with the same theme and supposed the same mint master don't match with the quality.

Compare the one you found and the one in my link they look almost like the real deal and a knock off.

I ran across the one in your latest link while searching for examples online. I just attributed it to different versions of the same theme. Thanks for your comments on my post. I'm leaving work now and heading back to the field to see if I can find another one!

That’s a nice solid hunt!!! It’s weird how streaks run, I was finding silver twice a week, now finding a wheatie is the highlight of my hunts. Congrats!!!!

Nothing wrong with a good after work hunt! Good luck!

Nice finds Steve. Congrats. Good luck when you go back.
