I was hunting in New Jersey at a family-owned property with a house that dates back to the 1700's. Quite a distance from the house, I found three buttons in the same general area. One is about the size of a quarter (and rather thin). Two are smaller. (see pics of front and backs).

The one that intrigues me is the largest. It has some sort of light pattern on it (see close up).

Does anyone have any insight into this button with respect to age/period?

Thanks in advance! P1010378.webpP1010382.webpP1010385.webp

That's an engraved tombac button. Mid to late 1700s.

Thanks so much!

At first I thought that it was a plain flat button, but after washing with water, I saw the pattern. I knew that someone here would be able to identify it!

The fact that I found 3 buttons all in the same general area (and away from the house), makes me think that there used to be something located here. I'll keep pounding it! I'm using the CTX3030. Any suggestions or strategies would be welcome!

Also, any advice on how to clean or preserve the button would be appreciated!
