My brussel sprouts are being devoured by these green monsters . Sevin dust specificaly states that it will not control them . Any ideas on another chemical insecticide that will ?
All a YAHOO search brought up was treehuggers that advocated hand picking the buggers ..........
I don't think sooooo . No time or inclination . I just want to murder them ASAP !

Try using some Pyrethrin spray or some BioNeem.

Hi Truck, I don't know what cabbage loopers are, but if they are the same as our cabbage white butterfly caterpillars, an old time gardener told me to get a load of cigarette butts, stick em in a bucket with water and let the soak for a day or two, strain the liquid and spray on the bu66ers. Nicotine poison will kill the caterpillars dead. It worked on my cabbage and on the greenfly on my chilies. Just don't spray too much or it will damage the plants, a misting does the job really quick.
Whatever way you choose, good luck.

Thanks ,my friend . I know how to make that mix . Problem is that I got the most beautiful tomatoes I have ever grown right beside them . I'd be devastated if I killed my 'maters with tobacco
mosaic while trying to snuff some green worms that are eating my sprouts .

Have you ever tried wood ash?
No , I haven't . I have an abundance of that . Is it effective ?

I think my dad and mom use to use ashes as bug dust. I really don't know how good it is, but there had to be something people used back in the day. Might be worth a try. Let me know if it works.

You can put the nicotine tea in a squirt bottle for better control.....have you tried diatomaceous earth for the caterpillars????

I don't know if it will work with your caterpillars but we used to go out and catch a bunch of potato bugs and mash 'em up and make a spray out of them. It seemed the smell of their own dead worked as a natural repellent. Good luck,

HH Charlie

Thanks for the input . Found a broad spectrum insecticide today that is supposed to kill the buggers . Applied it this evening . Will know soon if it works and will give a followup report .

DE is a powder used for pool filters. You can sprinkle it on your plants (but it will wash off when it rains.) If a 'pillar eats it, it's supposed to chew up their insides, kind of like eating crushed glass. I mix a little Sevin dust into it for good measure. Doesn't work too well for getting vine borers though....

Thanks Zeph :icon_thumleft:, I have learnt something new, and a day when you learn something is not a day lost.
