Well as you all should know I have yet to find a cache of any kind, but I have had a couple of stories pasted on to me now of old home places which have a story of burried coins. I fully intend to get to them in the near future but I was wondering how a cache would come across on the explorer.....say if it is a jar full of silver, would it still sound like silver only in a big way. Anyway, thought I would throw it up for dissucision. Thanks all.....gregd573

alot would depend on depth.

as SWR said, if the jar is sitting up, it will read
as a lid will.

IF deep, like a coin (I have almost always been fooled by mason jar lids.)

IF shallow, like an Aluminum can, it will give a large signal.

I Don't think it would be possable to miss a Mason Jar full of silver,
unless it's 6 Foot Deep or you get tired of digging Large Object signals.

Or you just don't swing over it.

GOOD LUCK !

I think Jeff of Pa is right on for what it's worth. Burdie

Thank you fellers'. I plan on digging anything that gives off the slightest beep so hopefully the stories will pan out. One never knows........thanks again, gregd573

i have thought about this before...... i'll tell you my biggest fear...... getting a signal ..... digging down and finding a jar lid..... taking the lid out and putting it in my trash pouch..... rechecking hole... no signal......refilling hole.....always wondering if i just passed up a jar full of CASH that doesnt make MD sound off...... but thats just me lol

if you're digging every good signal - you'll surely not miss such a target. if it's really deep - only a two-box is going to be of any real value. good luck!

Last lid I dug, This crossed my Mind.

Don't worry guys. The Explorer will sound off loud and clear for a jar of coins. It will be off on the depth of course. Reading a large target to be shallower than it really is. Whether you dig or not and how deep depends where you are hunting. If you're in the middle of a football field, you don't want to be digging a large target. But if you're at the foot of a big, old tree, you might want to give it a shot.

Hopefully, the person burying it buried it upside down, to keep water from getting in, thereby leaving the lid/bail on bottom. Good luck!

Well I guess you had better hope the jar has a metallic lid on it and is buried very shallow. Carl over on his forum duplicated Gary's coin hoard test from the UK. Carl buried 3lbs of silver(220 quarters) in a plastic container(no iron) at 24 inches. No detector and I mean everything was tried (Ex 11, 2 boxs, PIs, XLT, etc) and they all failed to detect this cache of quarters at 2 feet.

We had been filled with illusions on the capabilities of our detectors for so many years that we just assumed that this would be an easy test for "our " great detectors. So much for cache detectors.

I have heard that it is because of surface area more than anything. You can bury as many coins as you want, and a detector will not pick them up past a certain depth if the surface area is not great enough. Mass doesn't necessarily matter. Try a quarter at six inches, no prob. Turn the quarter on its side, big prob.
