"California Gully and The Quartz saddle reef of Death [New Chum Line]
Hi all,I have done my research for big project for the rest of summer. The Topic is The New Chum Quartz Saddle reef. The reef is about 22 miles long and has more than 56 different sites.Being one of the longest, its got a great history that spans more than a 120 years.Gold was first discovered in 1851 by George Emmit at the South end and it was to be 3 years before gold was found at the North end.California Gully got its name from the 49ers which mined alluvial gold first. Then the deep hard rock mines came later. The New Chum line was famous for 2 reasons gold and the amount of mine accidents that happened along this line. Many miners lost their lives or were injurded for life.Theres a link of all recorded mine accidents for a 100 miles round and there where hundreds of them. Please note Sandhurst{bendigo}, you will see just how many accidentds happened of this Quartz saddle reef.

Theres was more that 341 mines on the New Chum Reef Line.Today i went to the site of the most famous Mine Accident.
-----THE GREAT EXTENDED HUSSTLER'S NO 2-------
On 2 May 1914 there was a huge underground explosion that killed 18 miners and injuried many.Gas explosion was so great that the poppet head and engine room where flattened too.Even today you can see the poppet footing where moved and the side of the main shaft blew out wards.
I went to the first site today and i was there more than a minute and eyeballed the first coin on the ground. You can see the find in the first pic and the second pic you can see how all the clay has washed away leaving a small mound that the coin sat on.Next pic is a sign of area.
I will be adding heaps more pics of the Blown out shaft and of the site of the accident and followed by the first finds.
