The California State Mineral and Mining museum is located at the fair grounds in the historic mining town of Mariposa.
The museum houses a collection that was started in 1865 in San Francisco by a few of the famous miners of the Comstock era.
The official California State Mineral Collection has over 13,000 minerals, rocks, gems, fossils, and historic artifacts from around the world. Unfortunately, the museum is not very large, so only a small portion can be displayed at any given time.
Recently returned is the popular crystalline gold "Fricot Nugget", weighing 201 troy ounces (6.25 kg) — one of the largest found during the Gold Rush.
Mariposa also has an outstanding history museum full of displays and artifacts from the gold rush days, and is an absolute must to see if you can.
We have been wanting to visit this area for many years and had a chance to spend the day a few months ago. One day was not enough time to see and experience all the history this area has to offer. We plan on spending the night next time.
The first pic is of the collection in San Francisco around the turn of the century. It was located at the old ferry building.
Enjoy the pics
