The other day I called Kellyco for a price on two metal detectors. The person I spoke with sounded put out when I inquired about several of the percent off discount options that I've seen while searching their webpage and the web. The salesman reluctantly quoted me a lower price for the two detectors. I thanked him for the price quote and said that I had a couple of other places to call before I made my purchasing decision. That's when the salesman shifted to aggressive sale tactic overdrive. At least twice he mentioned how long Kellyco has been in business and how great they are as a company and that I should just buy from them and be done with it. Except for a few used car lots I thought this sales tactic went out in the 70's. For me he shut down the opportunity for a sale right then. I ended up buying a Whites MX Sport from a local dealer for $20.00 more then the price quoted from Kellyco. The price of a item is important but, how a customer is interacted with is prior to the sale gives insight to how they will be taken care of after the sale.

I would have to disagree with your Opinion for one Reason.

You said:

To me that is an Invitation to Convince you now.
Rather then have you try to play several companies against each other.

Especially after you said this :

Just like you feel Kellyco went overboard in sales Tactics.

I feel they may have gone overboard trying to give you deal :laughing7:

If I owned a Company and offered someone a special deal.
Especially Reluctantly. & they said they still needed to shop around,
I would have canceled the deal & hung up, as where the "aggressive sale tactic overdrive" may have been preferred by some
to see if they could do better right there . :dontknow:

Yes I was trying to find the best price. No I was not playing one company off another. That would take calling back and renegotiating a lower price based on a quote from another company. I didn't do that. I have found that the metal detecting manufactures only allow no lower than MAP prices to be advertised. So the company's selling the detectors all say call for the lowest price and/or best price. If the MAP price is the lowest price then what is the point in calling for the best price. Kellyco's own website has an offer for up to 7 percent off for social media participation. They also advertise a military discount, 15 percent off for Minelab and 10 percent off on other metal detectors. So for the salesman to say he doesn't know what I'm talking about at first is not good. It is not going overboard to acknowledge and offer a discount that they advertise. The company has a right to charge what they want for the product. Just as I as a customer have the right to shop around for the best deal. In this case I payed more for the detector then the best deal at Kellyco because the person at the shop I purchased the detector from treated me with respect. Who knows Kellyco could be a great company. The only experience I have is the salesman I spoke with on the phone.

I see nothing wrong with salesman's response at all, he or she was trying to make a sale, in fact you lost an opportunity to get it at an even lower price by not asking "how much more will you give me off if I buy right now and not call around...." It may easily have cost you more than $20.

In the end it is not just the price that matters. The salesman's approach to the sale put me off to the purchase. I don't care for the hard in your face sales technique. To me it says that they just want to make a sale. The question is what kind of customer service should I expect after the purchase. In the end, he did have the best price. But, I didn't feel comfortable buying from him.

I have been dealing with Kellyco for many years. Twice within the past two months I have had to just terminate the conversation I was having with their sales person on the phone. The reason being that they just did not want to take the time to answer questions. I have just one sales person there now which I have his direct call number who I deal with which does still take the time. They appear to have new people with a company based sales agenda and not a customer oriented friendly type of sales method. If the sales person is not talented and educated enough to intelligently answer proper questions then Kellyco is going to have to continue to answer to these type of disputes. I would suggest that someone in the kellyco management take a direct hand in their sales staff and elevate their knowledge so that this space on our forums can be used for other productive issues.

If you ever been in sales, it gets really frustrating when you get these type of shoppers who waist your time and never buy no matter what you say. Some buyers just want to play games.

Are you serious? Hanging up the phone to a customer? :violent1:

There is only one person to decide in the sales process, if a discussion is appropriate or aggressive: The customer – also called :icon_king:.

If somebody owned a company without being aware of that, he most probably would not own it for al long time. :sad11:

My wife owns a canvas/embroidery business.

I call most customers, "Time Suckers".

They simply suck up her time when she could be working on a product.

They call and have a zillion questions, want to know about fabric choices, colors and sizes available, production time, types of threads for canvas- they learn all they need to know.

Then order from China-mart online.

She has an outstanding reputation in the local community for quality work. The first call goes to voice mail. If they leave a message, they are a bit more serious about using her to produce the product.

Setting up an appointment generally wipes out the remaining time suckers.

The time suckers quickly move on to someone who will talk for an hour.

They do not have new sales people, current sales staff has been there for several years and longer.... They sell all major brands with multiple models for each brand plus accessories, there are approx 18 Minelab detectors alone, to expect every rep to know every model for every manufacturer inside and out is not realistic at all...

The space on TreasureNet for this thread is not an issue at all.......

I agree with you to a degree, depending on how aggressive the sales person gets, I don't like it either! I think you have every right to ask for their best price and shop around before you make your decision.

I have hung up on customers myself in the past because they became belligerent and or were just wasting my time....

Logic will tell most, that this subject has surfaced a lot recently. I can see no reason other than the truth for this to happen. It appears that this is like what is happening over at the Whites outfit. Could it be that the old varsity team has been moved out and we now are having to deal with the jr. varsity string? Over the years I had no issues with Kellyco but recently that seems to have changed. Customer questions are a big part of a sale. I do still purchase from them but I am fortunate enough now to have the name and ext. number of one of the old team who is still there and is a first class salesman. The times that I could not deal with who ever was the kellyco sales person, allowed me to contact other sales sponsors who needed the business and politely made me a enjoyable sale.

Call lots of shops! I called 8 places before my last purchase. Most detector shops a re small, one or two man ops. Some acted like they didn't care about making a sale and seemed put of they had to answer the phone. Others were friendly, helpful and answered my questions. The one I felt best about got my business.

So call around and spend money with someone who wants your business, not just your sales commission.

Yea "Time Suckers" ( who's the sucker?) are just looking for a free education at your expense.

Done a lot of business with them they always went out of there way to make sure I was happy.
sound like you are one of the mentioned time suckers???

Wow this thread spun out of control fast. I called them up,asked for a price quote, and thanked them for the price quote. Not on the phone long enough to be considered a "time sucker." But feel free make up your own stories as how things went...since you were there. hahaha

I just purchased a new metal detector last week from Kellyco. They had my order out to me within a few days! shipped quickly and followed up with a phone call because I had a concern. Great service if you ask me!
