Today my son and I went to Camp Logan to muddle around in the woods. I wanted to hit a small area that I had luck with in 15 minutes my first time there. Last time I plucked two buttons/disks, a button, and an aluminum tag.

Today we snagged a copper key, a couple of copper nails (small finish-type), and another aluminum tag that was too corroded for me to think would clean up.

The disks I pulled this past Friday morning is are inch or so across, copper or brass, raised lettering that with "771", and the background is dotted with fine raised dots which almost look mesh-like. The mounting post on the back is of the screw-post type.

Now for the geo-cache part. This past Friday morning I got out of my car, walked into the woods and there, about 20 feet in, was a small plastic shoe box on the far side of a log. I saw the box was open, so, I looked inside. A calculator, an educational cd for tots, a short list on 3x5 paper in sandwich bag of the people who had been there, and a couple of mechanical pencils.

Now, on Friday I didn't pay much attention to the box. I didn't really peruse it all that much. It was Friday morning at 7:15 am and I needed to be at work by 8:00 am or so. Today, however, my son and I looked at it together. The lid was covered in camoflauge tape and so were the sides of the box. I noticed the items a little more today, because well, I had time. On the inside of the lid I noticed the date. Somewhere around January or February of 1994 and with the coordinates. Now that's map and compass geo-caching I'll bet. I had on written on the lid the original contents. 8 Texas country music CDs. The last visitor to the box was in January 2006.

I explained the whole geo-caching spiel to the 'boy'. I re-loaded the box with it's spilled contents, placed it under the log it was next to and concealed it. Maybe someone else will happen along and find and their little game of hide-and-seek will continue.

Sorry I have no pictures. Still don't won a camera anymore. Funny thing is, it went mmissing just before I started detecting. Hmm.....the world may never know.

I have one more button like the '771' but I am still elctrocuting it. Hope it survives!!

Well stoney got it right. "ILL" it is. The other button cleaned up with the period and that's what put the fork in it for me.

Geocache

Thanks for replacing the cache! .. I geocache quite a bit (have found 186) along with MD'ing and it is frustrating to go to the trouble of looking for a cache and finding out someone has taken it - there is even a geocache term for it - 'muggled'. I have had to replace several of mine (I have 34 out) that have been muggled. So, again, thanks for replacing the cache - - -

Re: Camp Logan finds......

Nice finds. Was looking at a couple of items. Could the top left disc possibly be a WWI dog tag? Was also thinking that the button may say "ILL" instead of "771".

My thought exactly on the dog tag. Aluminum crud is incredibly difficult to remove. I do see a six on it though. This was after a few hours of electrolysis and countless solution changes. I also thought the other disk could be 'ill'. I haven't researched it yet, so, I am still unsure. I have another similar in size which I think I can see similar markings. I am not sure if I will tackle the other tag. As you can see from the crud it is far worse than the other. I am still hopeful of getting it cleaned up and maybe an ID.

The other thing I was thinking is that it may be an equipment tag of sorts. Very economic to order your tags by the thousands and use for for men and some for machines. Just a thought.

Thanks for looking.

Looks like a good place for more. Yep i've had to deal with removing crud as well and it's not that easy for me either

Oh that's not a problem. I would not like to see other people mess around with something I have going on. I guarantee the casual observer is not going to see. With modern GPS what it anyone looking for it will be able to locate it.
