That one may have been shot at a buffalo or other large game back then...

That is a 500 grain bullet for a 45-70 Springfield "trapdoor" rifle. Standard military issue from 1882-1898. A 405 grain bullet was used before that. The 500 grain bullet had more power and accuracy at longer range.I like to find old bullets! And that's a good one!
