I am new to the forum and metal detecting. Found this on a 110 year old homestead. It appears to be brass with some hard wood that looks like it was cut off. Several nails are near the brass holding what appears to be decayed leather material. I thought it perhaps was a cane handle but the wood is of rough size and shape. Otherwise, could it be a piece off of an old ornate piece of furniture? Any opinions?

Looks like the top of a cane or walking stick.

Another possibility is that it's a pommel from a knife or sword. Maybe from a whip or umbrella/parasol....whatever it's from it's cool!

Top portion of a cane or possibly an umbrella. It's definitely of a hunting dog though.

Looks like the end of a riding crop of someone who fox hunts on horseback.

I'm going with riding crop, or perhaps the end to a decorative fireplace poker?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it and I will study it some more.

Same here with what cti4sw said , but keep it so when you're in your 80's you can put it to use.

The features appear to have Art Deco qualities. I'd estimate its date to be the 1930s-40s.

With leather being involved , could be the decorative cap to a horse drawn buggy shaft, it probably had a mate at one time.

What about a Brass Saddle Horn????

Cool find  and welcome to TNet! :hello:

Now thats Cool! It does have that ,egyptian stream line look,,,, art deco style... I agree its a ridding crop! nice find that would make my year finding something like that!!:notworthy:

It's the top of a cane, my great grandfather walked with the same exact one.
