Hi,
I was detecting in the woods near the Hudson River In Catskill N.Y. when I found this button at 4". To my untrained eye it looks like a generic button but I would still like to know more about it if there is any more to know. All I can make out is "Scovills". I was in the area of Rogers Island and have heard about the indian wars there. It would be nice to connect the two.
Thanks

Civilian Button... nice too, and I'm assuming it's a one-piece button?

Here is some backmark information... I'm not sure what to read on the bottom of yours:

Sometimes one of the best indicators of button age is the manufacturers backmarks. Here are examples of the American manufacturer Scovill, and their 19th century backmarks as reported by Albert (1976):

LEVENWORTH, HAYDEN & SCOVILL (also as LH&S) 1811-1827
J.M.L. & W.H. SCOVILL 1827-1840
SCOVILLS : 1827-1840
SCOVILLS & CO. : 1840-1850
SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. : 1850-1960
SCOVILL Mg. Co.: 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mg. Co. / WATERBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf'g Co. : WATERBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf'g Co. WATERBURY : 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mfg Co. WATERBURY CT. : 1850-1865

Yes, it is a 1 piece button, appears to be brass and also is the thickness of the nickel. I thought it would be civillian. Its still a fun find. Thanks for the reply.

I can't see if it says "and co." but since it does have the "s" on the end it would date to 1850 at the latest. Am I correct?

lol... It would also suggest 1850 or earlier. Its good to have more than 1 reference. Thanks
