What is its size? Looks to be a base to something that has been broken off.

It's about one inch.brass I believe.

I have something similar like that and it has a round ball on the end. It was used to carry a candle. Mine is civil war time frame. See what these guys and gals say in here.

I'm 99% sure it's a bugle/Coronet/Trumpet mouthpiece cut off at the chamber stem.
