Can anyone tell me what type of rock?

I posted this in native American artifacts but no answer. I am digging a overhang and these white cracked looking rocks are popping up every now and then. Clay? I'm just not sure.

I think we can say they're not artifacts. They could be clay. Can you scrape it with your fingernail? Really fine grained or coarse grain?

Not hard at all. Really smooth to

Probably clay, then. Which means your overhang may not be stone, just unconsolidated soil. Be careful it doesn't drop on your head!
