Hi folks,

Searched around a good bit before asking.

I'm pretty much a novice...I have a Garrett Ace 250.

How far down can I detect something about 1/2 the size of a garden water bucket, say, 6x6x12 inches, or 1/2 a cubic foot, of solid or nearly solid metal?

In the best kind of soil? And in the worst kind? And how much of a difference if some air space involved?

And please, just point me to a good thread or web page in case I missed it.

Thanks so much.

With an Ace 250? Not likely. With a GPZ 7000? Sure! There are many others in between that would do the job too with the right coil and soil conditions.

Cudamark,

Thanks for that.

Would it help any to put another coil on the end of the 250?

I've done that deep with my GTI 2500 with the Eagle Eye.

You wont know for sure until you try it with your machine. Dig deep, put something that size in the hole and bury it.

Try different depths, it will help you learn what your machine does.

Larger metal can surprise you. I've uncovered a buried car battery at 18 - 20 inches with the 7" Tesoro Compadre and Silver Sabre umax both with solid, loud signals. Another time a rusty can similar to a 3 llb. coffe can at 15 inches with a Tesoro Eldorado and a 7" DD coil with a solid, loud signal. In either case I believe the target could have been a fair bit deeper and still give a decent signal. As mentioned above, experiment a bit with what you have.
