Can I subscribe to a thread without posting to it?

I read a lot of threads that I don't necessarily post in, but would like to keep up with the conversations.

Is there a way, without posting to the thread (ie. Tag!), to add it to my subscribed threads?

Additionally, if you happen to know a way other then going to a users/members profile and finding their most recent posts, I'd like to find a way to notify me when this user/member posts.
i.e. notify me when say... CannonBallGuy posts anything. There are 3 or 4 members I like to follow for educational reasons more than anything.
