See if there are any dive shops in your area. I know the shops where we live offer a free day at a local pool in the summer to try it out and see if it is something you like.

You still have to be a very strong swimmer, and have good lung capacity.. Otherwise, you cannot get certified. If you are physically able to pass the test, go for it

So it's not all about age, rather ability
