Dug yesterday in the field close to where I dug an 1866 Shield nickel. Non-ferrous, magnet won't stick. Before cleaning I thought it was a piece of barbed-wire. There appears to be leather or wood between the tiny pinned 'slats'. Any help is appreciated.

I can't remember the proper name for it, but there was a sorta ratcheting rein tension device used on wagons that had guts that looked similar to that. i hate being forgetful!:BangHead:

I wish was still "BosnMate" here to help with things like this! I miss that guy!

At first I thought maybe a hinge piece. Interesting find. Can’t wait for a positive ID. I wonder if there might be more of this piece close by.

No..the one I am thinking about was smaller, and had a ratchet-like mechanism and was mounted in a vertical position .. I will have to go through my books when I get home from work.

I'd say it's the top of a violin or some type of stringed insterment

This thing is about the size of a Cracker Jack peanut. It would have to be from the worlds smallest violin playing the worlds saddest song :laughing7:
