can you ID this old military helmet badge?

anybody know what era this large helmet badge comes from? it's about 4 1/2" inches in size, with a screw back for attaching to some type of hat or cap, helmet ?

Im guessing it could be pre WW1 era maybe Spanish American War era? 1895 - 1900's

Shako hat, War of 1812 through to 1850 I'll have to hunt it up.

Good news/bad news. Definately a shako hat fitting. Bad news is that the image here is a company that makes them currently for high school marching bands. Whole hat is $35, emblem $10. You'll have to find some marking that would identify the maker, at least.
