My wife found this at an antique shop today and just thought it was interesting enough to buy without breaking the bank. Curious on the age...pretty sure it's not silver but can't figure out the marks. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm thinking it was made within the last quarter of the 19th century. As for the marks they're probably the makers label and it looks to be made of steel from the pictures

Yes they're silver plate... what is known as "closed plate" where the silver is a thin foil-like coating fused to a (usually tin and sometimes steel) base and the edges 'closed'... ie smoothed over to conceal any joins. It's very prone to peeling off. The maker is R. Silk of Birmingham, England, c.1809
