I don't believe it is a canister plate as they don't have the projection on them. They will have a slight indent around the bottom of the plate where the balls sat.

Duggap, it's hard to see from the pics, but there is a ridge around the outer edge.
Thanks for the post, Breezie

It almost looks like a stove plate from an old wood burner. Not sure about the size though.

Jon

Thank you Jon for your idea, but it measures only 3 inches in diameter. Breezie

Does the tab have a hole in it?

Good Morning Creskol, no it doesn't have a hole. I've attached another pic showing a close-up of the tab, plus you can see the indented lip close to the edge.

Hey Pete, it's good to hear from you. I've always been intrigued with Salesman's Samples since they had to be made just like the large original pieces. I think the cover plate on the one you pictured has the right 'tab,' but on mine, the tab side is the side with the indented lip close to the edge. It's a possibility, and one I will research. Thanks! Last evening it was getting dark, so after I dug it, I had to leave. As soon as the weather cooperates, I'm going back and MD around the same area to see if I can find some other pieces. Breezie
